Family, a best friend since 1951 and other well-wishers gathered at Atlantic Shores, Christ Church, on Wednesday to usher Lorna Austin into Barbados’ centenarian club.
Austin, who was born in Guyana, has suffered hearing loss and speaks much less these days, but remains healthy. Her family says she does not take medication.
Children Betty-June Leacock and Nigel Austin were happy to see their mother reach the milestone.
“I am actually in awe of my own mom becoming 100. She is only the second person that I have encountered (to reach that age). You hear about centenarians but I have only spoken personally to one centenarian. I feel blessed to have my mom for 100 years,” Leacock said.
Meanwhile, best friend Norma Odle, who sat by Austin’s side for the celebration, said they have remained close for decades.
“We have been best friends since 1951. Throughout the years, whenever we would go to parties we would be together. Old Year’s night was special, we would always bring her children to my house with my children and the four of us [Austin, Odle and their husbands] would go out dancing and have some lovely times,” she said.
