Gold Cup precaution

Just like Kensington, it looks like The Garrison also has some outfield issues.

But not enough to set back the region’s biggest race day.

The Sandy Lane Gold Cup will run off as scheduled next month even as the Barbados Turf Club (BTC) has cancelled tomorrow’s race day due to “extensive damage and lack of mature grass in many parts of the main running area”.

BTC chief executive officer Rosette Peirce gave the assurance after describing the measure as a mere precautionary one ahead of the big March 3 event.

“We could’ve run this weekend because it’s not a case where the track is unsafe, but it was felt that the grass needs to take a break as the new grass would never mature properly if it continues to take a beating,” Peirce explained.

“We just decided it was pertinent to get the track in tiptop shape and look as good as possible for the Gold Cup where we wouldn’t have those big bald spots and straggly type-looking grass in many areas for the world to see.

“In January we had some rains and the track took some damage in terms of loss of grass which led to the bald areas, but rest assured the Sandy Lane Gold Cup is not under any threat whatsoever,” she added. (JM)
