Some of the big boys finally flexed their muscles on court when the rains allowed a full slate of action in the Silver Hill Road Tennis competition on Tuesday night.
Jamar “Bob” Best, who recently captured the Islandwide B Class crown for Christ Church, was tested by the consummate chopper Kertman Harewood before taking the extended battle 21-15, 21-23, 21-15.
Harewood, wielding an unusually large racquet, put the usually flamboyant Best on the defensive. However, employing a stubborn and consistent return game, Best advanced to the next round.
A fit looking Junior Alleyne was challenged by relative unknown Anthony Harris before Alleyne curbed his attacking and at times erratic play and won 21-19, 21-19.
Veteran Michael “Trembles” Sobers created some shakes for Michael “Mikey Jean” Jean before the more consistent Jean triumphed 21-12, 15-21, 21-12.
Elimination
Wayne Clarke ensured that Cheddi “John The Baptist” Forde kept his dismal first-round elimination record by dismissing him 21-12, 21-10.
Dwayne Lynch never extended himself in strolling past Seth Best 21-16, 21-17.
Matthew Grazette easily eliminated Tyrone Evelyn 21-10, 21-13 and former national table tennis player Abbie “Play Boy” Clarke closed out the night by turning back a stiff challenge from Leon Carter 21-10, 21-13.
The fans are expected to begin swarming the Silver Hill court from tonight, with more of the “big dogs’ coming out to battle.
Kerry “TC” Francis meets Shane Dotson, Davian “Force Ripe” Taylor plays Andrew Goodridge, Winston “Charles McEnroe” Griffith meets Terry “The Puncher” Dottin, Roy Reveillac clashes with Anthony “Horse” Haynes, and Merlon Edwards faces Wayne Jones in the A Class open. (KB)
