Barbados is on a mission to save lives by tackling the problem of micro plastics.

Minister of the Environment Adrian Forde, speaking yesterday in his Warrens Tower II office, said micro plastics could be absorbed into plants, animals and humans.

“When these plastics get into our ecosystems, where they will end up is anybody’s guess. The breakdown of this material can be absorbed into our plant life. Everyone knows Barbadians enjoy their fruits and vegetables so when these micro plastics get absorbed into our plant life, they end up in our digestive systems,” he said during a press conference.

Micro plastics can be responsible for a laundry list of ailments, including cytotoxicity, hypersensitivity, unwanted immune responses, chronic inflammation and even cancer. (CA)
