KINGSTOWN – For the second successive match, Barbados Pride’s bowlers produced a remarkable effort to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat, this time against the Windward Islands Volcanoes yesterday.
Set 270 for victory, the Volcanoes seemed set to complete victory after resuming the day on 181 for three at the Arnos Vale Sports Complex.
But Miguel Cummins and Jomel Warrican ran through the Volcanoes’ middle order to dismiss them for 246 and give the Pride a 23-run victory.
Warrican, who ended with a match haul of 11 for 133, triggered the slide by bowling topscorer Kavem Hodge for 66 to leave the Volcanoes on 182 for four.
Cummins then picked up the wickets of Roland Cato for 31 and Dennis Smith for a third-ball duck as the home side slipped to 193 for six.
Five runs later Cummins struck again, accounting for the wicket of Ray Jordan, who made one.
Sherman Lewis and Alick Athanaze came together in a 41-run partnership for the eighth wicket to put the Volcanoes back on track.
But just as it seemed as though they had wrestled the initiative away from the Pride, Chaim Holder claimed the crucial wicket of Lewis for 21 to leave the game evenly poised at 239 for eight.
The end came swiftly after his dismissal, with Athanaze following seven runs later to Holder for a well-played 33, before Warrican wrapped up the match by bowling Larry Edward, who faced 20-balls, for a duck.
Cummins ended with four wickets for 53 runs, while Warrican took three for 88 and Holder two for 64.
