Dave Richards of National Gym gave Barbados its only victory against foreign opposition at the 12th annual Carlton Hope/Lionel Hall Memorial Boxing Tournament at the Graydon Sealy Secondary School on Saturday night.

Fighting out of the red corner, he was impressive in defeating Martinique’s David Florimund in their light middleweight (67-71 kilograms) open bout.

Richards came out with confidence and directness and he dominated the first of the three three-minute rounds.

Florimund found his footing and gave Richards a run for his money in rounds two and three. But Richards used his reach, speed and footwork to triumph on points as the crowd erupted in glee.

Richards’ win was significant because it came between two losses for Barbados against the Martinique boxers. (DG)
