Man charged, fined for cannabis

Members of the Drug Squad have arrested and charged 31-year-old Tomel Omar Bascombe, of Sugar Hill, St Joseph, for a number of drug related offences, which were allegedly committed at the Grantley Adams International Airport on Saturday, February 3. 

Bascombe was arrested and charged with unlawful possession of cannabis, unlawful possession of cannabis with intent to supply, trafficking of cannabis and importation of cannabis.

On Saturday, February 3, Bascombe arrived on the island from New York. Having cleared Immigration, he proceeded to Customs, where a search was conducted of his luggage.

During this search, Custom Officials discovered one transparent package containing cannabis, concealed in a polo shirt. A further search revealed two transparent vacuum-sealed packages each containing cannabis. These were concealed in two plastic containers, bearing the markings “Huggies”.

The police were informed and Bascombe was subsequently arrested and charged.   

Bascombe appeared before Magistrate Laurie-Ann Smith-Bovell in the District ‘B’ Magistrates Court today.

He pleaded guilty to the offences, and was fined $7 500 forthwith for the offence of trafficking. He was convicted, reprimanded and discharged for the remaining offences.

The fine was paid.

The total weight of the cannabis was about three pounds and had an estimated street value of $12 000. (PR)
