The opening of the popular Silver Hill Road Tennis Championship was disrupted by the rain on Saturday night but not before four exciting matches were completed.
In the in-house section of the tournament, the dangerous Romell “Cut-Lee” Forde was given a score by Karyan Jordan before slicing up his opponent 18-21, 21-13, 22-20.
There were no such problems for former CARIFTA athlete Shawn Browne as he sprinted by Anderson Griffith 21-16, 21-18.
In the first of the “A” class battles, Tyrone “Picka” Jones seemed in control against the grim looking Ricardo Taylor before Jones strangely went outside his zone to play an attacking game. Posing more danger to the net, Jones went down 21-17, 13-21, 17-21.
Adrian Scott then disposed of Chelston’s favourite son Ashton Blackett 21-11, 21-12 with Scott unreeling a variety of shots against his opponent.
Unfortunately, the rains then disrupted and finally ended an exciting start between Station Sargeant Lloyd Deane and Jerry Harris.
The action continues tonight at the Silver Hill courts where 50 players have entered the men’s Open where Mark “Venom” Griffith is the defending champion. There is also a ladies section, an in-house category and a 17-and-under competition.
The top male will win $5 000 while the leading female will earn $3 500. The winner of the in-house gets $1 250 while the 17-and-under champion takes home $750. This year eight persons in every category will be awarded. (KB)
