Call for sports hall of fame

Former minster and member of Parliament Hamilton Lashley has made an urgent appeal to government to establish a general sports hall of fame to honour outstanding past and present athletes and journalists.

He also highlighted his growing dissatisfaction with the lack of regard such prominent persons are given in this country.

“I am thinking more holistically, and the time has come for certain outstanding athletes and journalists to be recognised for their invaluable contributions in the form of national honours. Now, I don’t only mean they should be honoured in an Independence Day ceremony, but I feel we should establish a national sports hall of fame as a domicile where our sporting greats can be given their due,” Lashley told Saturday Sport.

The former St Michael South East parliamentary representative also made a bold suggestion as to what would be the ideal location for the proposed sports hall of fame.

“The old Empire Theatre would be the perfect venue because it is in the heart of the city, right across the street from Golden Square Freedom Park, and in close proximity to both Independence Square and Heroes Square.  .  .”  (DG)
