Woman fined $8 000 after admitting to trafficking cannabis

A Jamaican national today pleaded guilty to a number of drug-related offences which were committed at the Grantley Adams International Airport on January 21.

Thirty-five-year-old Alicia Tamara Beckford had been arrested and charged with possession of cannabis, possession with intent to supply, trafficking and importation as well as possession of counterfeit currency.

She arrived on the island by air from Jamaica via Trinidad. Having cleared Immigration, she was interviewed by police. A subsequent search revealed that she had a condom filled with cannabis concealed in her vagina.

A further search revealed that Beckford was also in possession of counterfeit currency. She was subsequently referred to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital where she later passed out 39 packages each containing cannabis.

She appeared before Magistrate Laurie-Ann Smith-Bovell today and pleaded guilty to the drug-related offences.

She was fined $8 000 forthwith for the offence of importation and convicted, reprimanded and discharged for the other offences.

Beckford was not required to plead to the offence of possession of counterfeit currency.

The weight of the suspected cannabis is one kilogramme and it has an estimated street value of $8 000. (PR/NB)
