Nearly 100 outlets selling knock-offs

The selling of counterfeit Puma shoes may just be the tip of the iceberg.

According to legal representative for Puma on the island, Mark Hope, fake pharmaceuticals and domestic products have also been identified.

And Hope is sending a warning to those guilty parties, saying that other international brands having expressed an interest in taking legal action against them.

“The counterfeit goes beyond Puma and goes beyond attire. We are seeing it in pharmaceuticals and consumer items, medicines and domestic products, so it runs the full gamut, not just sports attire, it’s wider than that.

“My office is presently in discussion with a number of brands, either directly or through their representative. Puma has a reputation in the marketplace of fairly actively protecting its intellectual property.

“Barbados by itself is a relatively small market, but we fit into the Caribbean and Latin America, which gives us a wider scope, so the other brands are looking on, waiting on Puma’s progress and success with their enforcement endeavours, so that they will themselves determine if they will move forward,” Hope told the Weekend NATION.
