Govt to switch customs officers

After three years of controversy, it seems Government is finally set to go ahead and transition the Customs & Excise Department into the Barbados Revenue Authority (BRA).

But Government’s decision will still be met with the same rebuttal from customs officers reluctant to join the umbrella revenue agency, says the National Union of Public Workers (NUPW).

A source at the BRA told the DAILY NATION a meeting chaired by Minister of Finance Chris Sinckler took place among officials from the Ministry of Civil Service, the NUPW, Barbados Workers’ Union and customs officers and guards last Friday.

At that meeting, Sinckler indicated that Cabinet had taken the decision to legislate the customs department into the BRA.

However, NUPW general secretary Roslyn Smith explained neither the union nor the customs officers were moved by Government’s decision. (AD)
