A Jamaican man will spend 18 months at Her Majesty’s Prison Dodds after failing to come up with a $4 000 forthwith fine for drug offences.
Thirty-year-old Bassonia Collister McDermouth arrived in Barbados by on January 11 from Kingston.
Having cleared Immigration, he was interviewed by members of the Drug Squad. A search of his personal effects revealed counterfeit currency.
McDermouth was later arrested and referred to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital where he passed out 60 packages wrapped in transparent tape, each containing cannabis. He was subsequently charged for the offences.
He appeared before Magistrate Laurie-Ann Smith-Bovell in the District
“B” Magistrates’ Court today charged with possession of cannabis, possession with intent to supply, trafficking and importation.
He also faced an additional charge of possession of counterfeit currency.
McDermouth pleaded guilty to all the drug offences.
He was fined for the offence of trafficking cannabis and reprimanded and discharged for the other drug offences.
He was not required to plead to the charge of possession of counterfeit currency. (PR/NB)
