As of today people doing business at the St Philip Polyclinic will be required to walk through a metal detector under the watchful eye of additional security officers from a private firm.
Spokesperson for the Ministry of Health, communications specialist Joy Ann Haigh, said the security measures were put in place following a man wielding a knife at a nurse and threatening to kill her last Thursday.
She said a tent had been set up as shelter for people seeking medical attention and friends and relatives accompanying them, since it was expected the heightened security measures might result in people standing outside for longer periods before they can enter.
“We have put the tent on the outside because we recognise that at times a minute or two would be added on to your entry times. It wouldn’t be a major delay, just like a minute or two as you would actually have to go through a scanner, and you may be required to show the security what is in your bag if you are asked.
“So we encourage the public obviously to not have anything that would create any delays. No lighters, no weapons, including that of work tools, will be allowed in the polyclinic. . .” (AH)
