The statue honouring Sir Charles Griffith is set to be unveiled next month at Kensington Oval, says Barbados Cricket Association vice-president Calvin Hope.
Hope spoke to MIDWEEK SPORT about the progress of the project and stated that Sir Charles was more than deserving of the honour based on his invaluable contribution to West Indies cricket.
“We completed Sir Wes’ statue and now we are working on Sir Charles, who is a true unsung hero based on not just what he did on the field but off the field in terms of coaching and mentoring young players for almost 30 years.
“I, myself was one the people coached by him as was [The Most Honourable] Desmond Haynes and [the late] Malcolm Marshall. The statue is in the country and will be unveiled on March 25, where there will be a launch similar to the one done for Sir Wes. The statue was completed by a local sculptor called Stephen Hope, who would have also sculpted Sir Wes’ statue,” said Hope.
“It has been in the planning for a long time. A group of friends came together after having lunch every Tuesday and one of them came up with the idea to honour and celebrate the iconic players from the Sir Garfield Sobers era.” (DG)
