The inaugural Warrens Volleyball Champions’ League serves off this evening with 50 of the island’s best players battling for supremacy at Oldbury, St Philip.
Repeat league queens Pan American International Insurance Warrens have indicated that the tournament “will seek to honour the spirit of camaraderie and commitment of the players and officials who continue to be ambassadors for volleyball in Barbados”.
Twenty-three females and 27 males have been invited to compete on six teams including Hi-Flyers, Renegades and Thunders. Renegades and Flyers will open the actions this evening with the females meeting at 6:30 p.m. the males taking to the court at 8 p.m.
While veterans like Anthazia Mason, Afiya Taylor, Julia Lewis, Talya Layne, Thonya Joseph, Sharon Bovell, Fabian Cox, and Dale Addison have been good enough to take spots on the teams, a larger percentage of junior players make up the rosters.
Former professional player and Caribbean MVP Shari Matthews will coach the Thunders while the other coaches are Leron Knight, Cedric Proverbs, Elwyn Oxley and Marcus Green.
Warrens have indicated that in keeping with the stipulations of the NCAA and other collegiate rules, there will not be any prizes to deter or jeopardise the eligibility of any young player who may be looking to secure future scholarship opportunities. (KB)
