Faced with a dwindling number of criminal lawyers, the island’s newest Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) wants to see more lawyers entering that field.
But that may be easier said than done, says two experienced criminal lawyers, who believe the lure of big bucks was pushing young lawyers into corporate law.
In an interview with the DAILY NATION Barbados’ first woman DPP Donna Babb-Agard QC added her voice to those of Attorney General Adriel Brathwaite, QC, and Chief Justice Sir Marston Gibson in calling for young, up and coming attorneys-at-law to practise criminal law.
“I would like to see more criminal lawyers. There are just a handful of lawyers now and we all know who they are. They are the people who the accused men would want as their attorneys-at-law because they are well known on the criminal side of things.
“But I would like to see more young attorneys as they get called to the bar, come into the criminal side of the law,” Babb-Agard said. (RB)
