CARIBBEAN SENIOR CHAMPION Trevor Farley emerged as the favourite to capture the local senior title when the table tennis component of the National Senior Games started last Sunday at the Table Tennis Centre, Nursery Drive, St Michael.
Dale Rudder was as dominant as Farley and will clearly be a threat, while Rawle Husbands pulled off two impressive wins, signalling the start of an intense and intriguing competition among the seniors.
Farley, who won the Caribbean senior title when the Caribbean Championships were contested in Guyana recently, recorded three victories without any major alarms. The men’s national coach started with a victory against newcomer Glenworth Joseph 12-10, 7-11, 11-2, 11-8. He then outplayed Neil Gale 11-1, 11-4, 11-3 before completing a satisfying session by beating Devere Lindo 11-6, 12-10, 11-9.
Rudder, who is the current president of the Barbados Table Tennis Association, opened his winning account by beating Joseph 11-7, 11-9, 12-10. He downed Lindo 11-6, 11-5, 12-10 and cruised past Beverley Sealy 11-3, 11-2, 11-6.
Husbands, a gutsy all-round player, beat Roger Hill 11-7, 11-5, 11-7 but his more satisfying success came over fellow veteran Charles Lovell. The two have had many a battle over the several decades they have competed on the local tables, but on this occasion Husbands triumphed 11-7, 11-3, 6-11, 11-5, 11-9.
Lovell beat left-hander John Pilgrim 11-7, 11-5, 9-11, 8-11, 11-6 and Hill 11-5, 11-4, 11-3.
Chris Banfield and Wilmont “Funk” Goddard, two stalwarts in the Senior Games over several seasons, both made their presence felt.
Banfield, in his only match, defeated Goddard 11-4, 14-12, 5-11, 12-10.
Goddard came from two games down to defeat Wayne Branch 10-12, 8-11, 11-7, 11-8, 11-8.
