PORT OF SPAIN – A 23-year old unemployed Venezuelan national was jailed for three months on Friday after she pleaded guilty to entering the country illegally in September.

Carolina Foto Villar appeared before Senior Magistrate Joanne Connor charged with entering Trinidad and Tobago illegally on September 15, this year.

The Chaguanas First District Court in Trinidad heard that Police Villar entered the country at an unknown beach and not a place designated as a port of entry.

She was not represented by an attorney and through an interpreter, said that she was unemployed in her home country and came to Trinidad seeking a job. The court also heard that Villar is a mother of two. Her youngest child is two years old.

Several Venezuelans have been travelling to Trinidad and Tobago in search of employment following the economic hardships being experienced in the South American country as a result of the drastic decline in the global price for oil. (CMC)
