The tenth Chinese Fish & Dragon Festival Gala, held at the Frank Collymore Hall on Monday night and hosted for the third year by the Central Bank of Barbados, featured an amazing performance by the famous Chinese Zhejiang Wu Opera Research Centre.
It was an evening for the mixed audience of Barbadians and Chinese to be thrilled by the troupe, which brought more than 400 years of tradition in performances of dance, acrobatics, martial arts scenes, storytelling, colourful pageantry and seemingly magical displays.
The riveting showcase of rich Chinese traditional culture was as much an opportunity to further cement the long-lasting relations between the two countries as it was to provide an evening of rich choreography.
China, on September 4, 1967, was among the first countries the island established diplomatic relations with, after securing its independence from Britain in November 1966.
“Addressing shared challenges and advancing toward a brighter future require the power of civilisations coming together,” China’s charge d’affaires Huang Xinhua told the audience.
He said China anticipated the Fish & Dragon Festival, which has been held for ten consecutive years as part of the Chinese Spring Festival Cultural Event, would continue to be appreciated and supported by people from all walks of life in Barbados. (HH)
