National distance runner Joshua Hunte crossed the finish line first in 17 minutes, 30.27 seconds in the highly anticipated 5-kilometre race yesterday at the 15th edition of the Joseph Payne Memorial Classic.

However, nine-year-old Glory Fraser was the real star performer, warming the hearts of spectators at the Usain Bolt Sports Complex with her determination as she matched strides with the older runners in the 5K run, which attracted close to 50 competitors.

The talented Class 1 student of Reynold Weekes Primary ran an unforgettable race, on the Ryan Brathwaite Track.

Fraser, the younger sister of former outstanding national distance runner Mary Fraser, finished second among the women in 20:12.01 minutes and sixth overall, just behind veteran Carlie Robinson, of Elite Distance, who clocked 19:55.30 minutes to place fifth overall and claim first place among the women.

The top four finishers in the 5K were all males, with Shamel Maynard, running independently, finishing second with a time of 17:49.29, followed by Brendon Gill, of Pacers Club, (18:07.54) in third place and Imani Douglin (19:36.61) fourth. (ML)
