MATTHEW WRIGHT looks right at home with the big boys.

The Bajan triathlete may have delivered his best performance yet, placing ninth at last weekend’s Sarasota World Cup in Florida for his very first top ten finish at a World Cup.

Racing in a hotly contested sprint duathlon, Wright completed the 2.5k run, 20k ride and 5k run in 50 minutes flat to finish just 14 seconds behind eventual winner Rodrigo Gonzalez of Mexico.

It bettered the 25-year-old Wright’s previous best showing of 40th at a World Cup event.

In the process, the former CARIFTA distance champ placed ahead of highly world-rated athletes such as Rio Olympic bronze medallist Henri Schoeman.

“I’m absolutely ecstatic as my run had finally come together after two long years of injuries holding it back and making me really doubt my ability,” said Wright.

“It’s amazing what a few months of consistent training can do as this is by far the best result of my career. I still have to do it in a triathlon and luckily I have CAMTRI Championships in two weeks in Puerto Lopez, Ecuador, and then ending my season the following weekend in the Salinas World Cup, also in Ecuador.

“But to be running with Olympians and World Series medallists, and even beat the Olympic bronze medallist definitely helps with the confidence,” he added. (JM)
