The long wait is over for teachers.
After four decades of calls for the teaching profession to be given a separate service commission, Prime Minister Freundel Stuart yesterday announced a date for the establishment of the Teaching Service Commission.
“I am pleased to report that the Cabinet has agreed that the proclamation date for Section 89A of the Barbados Constitution (Amendment) Act, and the Service Commissions Amendment Act 1975-48, which give effect to the establishment and operation of a Teaching Service Commission, will be October 16, 2017.
“Once these provisions are proclaimed, I will be moving to invite the Governor General to appoint the members of the commission. The establishment of the Teaching Service Commission will intensify the attention given to the teaching community, and provide a medium through which their concerns are appropriately ventilated,” he disclosed during the launch of the Personnel Administration Division’s Correspondence Management System at the Lloyd Erskine Sandiford Centre yesterday.
