IT’S BEEN SAID COUNTLESS TIMES that music can soothe the soul and wash away any troubles.
This certainly was the case when the four-member Ibis Ensemble performed for about 45 minutes to a very appreciative audience at the Derrick Smith Auditorium last Friday evening.
The talented musicians – Caitlyn Kamminga (double bass), Yevgeny Dokshansky (saxophone), Hayward Mickens (piano) and Josh Watkins (percussion) played sweet chamber music that just released the stresses of the day – whether it was Dominique Le Grende’s Songs And Dances Of The Islands Suite, or Henghel Gualdi’s Passeggiando Per Brooklyn (a walk through Brooklyn).
They also played Erwin Schuloff’s Hot Sonata featuring Mickens and Dokshansky whose sax sound was playful and oh so sweet; Roger Henrys Rondelle which reminded one of birds chirping gleefully as they fly around; Brazilian composer Heitor Villa-Lobos’ Pequena Suite: Legendaria, Melodia, Fugato All; and Antica featuring Kamminga and Mickens. These were short and delightful with varying tempos. (GBM)
