Minister of Finance Christopher Sinckler said he was surprised by the level of resistance from the unions to the integration of the Customs Department into the Barbados Revenue Authority (BRA).

But he stressed that while the delay has been costing the island and the public money, the integration would be going ahead.

“I personally was a little surprised, I must say, at the level of resistance coming from the unions and also from some of the officers themselves to this move,” Sinckler said.

“But it is a move to which Government is committed and on which we have spent a considerable amount of time,” he declared. “And very shortly, you will hear something from the ministry once the Cabinet has been appraised of the new way forward that we are contemplating. Of course, we will engage with our partners, the unions and others in this particular regard,” he said. (HLE)
