Barbados’ newest political party Friends of Democracy is moving full speed ahead with its candidate selection.

President Karina Goodridge told the Daily Nation yesterday they already had the criteria in place and names will soon be announced.

“We’re looking to have at least 21 persons, so all now the Candidate Selection Committee has met and they are selecting people from Barbados to represent Friends of Democracy. We even have the candidate selection document setting out what will be needed if you want to be a candidate. We [have] everything documented properly,” she said in a telephone interview.

The party, which was officially launched on July 1, announced six spokespersons, but is yet to say where they will be running as candidates.

Goodridge, an attorney, is spokesperson on health, social services and criminal justice; fellow lawyer Ricardo Harrison has housing and home affairs, which includes the police, fire and prison services, while Andwele Williams is responsible for youth and sports. The portfolio of cultural industries falls to Danielle Forte; Matthew Thorne has innovation, global empowerment, education reform and ecclesiastical affairs, while Raymond Wiggins will speak on education (technological and vocational training).

She said former Democratic Labour Party (DLP) president Dr Ronnie Yearwood was no longer associated with the group, many of whom had broken away from the DLP. (SAT)
