SO NEAR AND yet so far away.

Barbados were starting to smell the taste of victory at 3-1 and 40-15 in the crucial fifth set, but stunningly, it all fell apart and the tenacious Venezuela battled back to clinch a marathon cliffhanger and grab a 2-1 lead in their top of the table Americas Zone Davis Cup tie at the National Tennis Centre yesterday.

Venezuela won 7-6 (7-0), 2-6, 6-4, 3-6, 7-5 to silence a partisan home crowd that included former local tennis champion Tyrone Mapp, professional boxer Christopher “Shaka” Henry and five-time Carifta Games track & field medallist Keisha Walkes.

It means that Barbados will have to win both of today’s reverse singles to clinch the tie and earn promotion to Group 1. (MK)
