Some of the graduates of the Barbados Community College (BCC) music programme recently put on quite a show at a donor concert in appreciation of the presentation of a Steinway Sons grand piano to the college.
Held at the college, the concert was an evening of class, talent and dedication as Romari Welch got things off to a good start with his rendition on the piano of the gospel song Indescribable. He was followed by the duo of Matthew Banfield on the piano and Nicholas Stevenson on the trumpet.
The 2017 graduates did two pieces, Eine Kleine Nachtmusik by Mozart and Misty by Errol Garner, for an appreciative audience which included realtor Sir Paul Altman, well-known musician Roger Gittens, Allison Thompson and Michael Gibbons from Piano Caribbean.
It’s always an inspiration to see and hear Rhea Drakes play the piano, and she did a jazz medley accompanied by Petra Welch on the drums. Abigail Sandiford, who has attained a Merit in the Royal School of Music Grade 8 piano examination. wowed the gathering with Ballade In F Major (No.2 Opus .38) by Chopin.
The final performance saw tutor Andre Daniel joining with two of his students, Stefan Bascombe and Aaron Layne, on one piano to perform a number of selections, ending with the hymn What A Friend We Have In Jesus. (RL)
