BARBADOS’ ABILITY to clear the country of garbage is about to change significantly.

And a change in legislation will see the country increase its capacity to recycle used containers.

Minister of the Environment Trevor Prescod revealed in the House of Assembly yesterday that 22 new garbage trucks would be available by early next year, bringing the total complement available to the Sanitation Service Authority (SSA) to 29 within the next month.

It should provide a reprieve for scores of residents who have been complaining for months of no garbage pick-ups for protracted periods this year.

“We have two more new trucks. And by this time next week, we will have ten more new trucks, and early in the new year, ten more new trucks. We are on our way,” Prescod said to loud table-thumping from colleagues while tabling the Returnable Containers (Amendment) Bill, 2019 in the Lower House. (BA)
