Darian King’s US Open campaign is over but none can say he went down without a fight.

168-ranked King, the first Barbadian to make the main draw of a Grand Slam, battled to a 7-6(11-9) 7-5 6-4 loss against fourth-seeded German Alexander Zverev this morning at the US Open.

The game was pushed back until 11 pm Monday night and went until until nearly 2 am Tuesday morning due to a lengthy, nearly 3 hour match on the Arthur Ashe stadium courts between Maria Sharapova and Simona Halep.

Despite the gulf in their rankings, King more than held his own against the big hitting 20 year old who is one of the early favourites in the US Open. Zverev paid kudos to King after their nearly 3 hour game ended, saying:

“Obviously Darian came out playing really good tennis and I couldn’t find my rhythm.”
