GUESTS WERE GIVEN more than a sample of what’s in store for November’s Barbados Food And Rum Festival when the George Washington House was transformed with a festival theme last week for the festival’s launch.
Under a large, appropriately decorated tent, the island’s award-winning chefs and mixologists served up Barbados dishes with international flair and appeal, as well as unique rum cocktails that supported the widespread claim that Barbados is the birthplace of rum.
Tourism officials representing various sectors, hoteliers, festival sponsors and other guests were greeted at the launch reception in the historic residence where the young man who later became the first president of the United States, stayed in 1751, during his only trip outside the United States.
Appropriately, President George Washington and Mrs Washington (Dr Karl Watson and Penelope Hynam, respectively, in period dress) were at the door to greet guests arriving for the evening. The band of the Barbados Defence Force and the energetic Ever Jammin duo from the Barbados Community College kept the spirits high. (GC)
