FORMER QUEENS Burger King Clapham Toners upstaged the current monarchs Pan American International Insurance Warrens when the all-girls show was put on in the Goddard Enterprises Limited senior volleyball knockouts at Oldbury on Sunday night.

While Warrens romped to 2-0 with a facile 25-11, 25-22, 25-19 win over Frozen Minis Carlton, Toners stunned favourites UWI Blackbirds in a five-setter 25-19, 22-25, 25-22, 15-25, 15-8 to advance to 3-0. Both Warrens and Toners were to battle at the Kensington Bond last night.

The spiking potency of Toners’ junior nationals Aaliyah Durant and Ashley Jordan, with the support of experienced all-round Shennel Pooler, thwarted UWI with Dania Hamilton, Sharon Bovell and setter Afyia Taylor threatening to continue their unbeaten romp from Division 2.

Both Durant and Jordan hit the ball with great force from all sides of the courts as southpaw Hamilton fought valiantly to hand the Toners their first loss of the season. However, Toners’ coach Cedric Proverbs and Pooler employed cunning tactics to take the decider after four bruising sets. (KB)
