THE BARBADOS ASSOCIATION of Professional Engineers (BAPE) is pleading with Government to reintroduce the country’s national building code.
According to president of BAPE, Grenville Phillips Jr, a lack of the code continues to put residential and commercial construction at risk.
The revised code was released in 1993, but withdrawn four years ago and replaced with a new version.
“It was an excellent building code,” Phillips, a structural engineer, said of the 1993 version. “It could have been understood by the professionals, by homeowners and contractors. Contractors knew what they had to do, homeowners could check it to make sure contractors were doing what they were hired to do, and building professionals could use it. It contained all the technical advice normally given by engineers and architects.” (BA)
