KEVIN SIMMONS YESTERDAY poignantly shared the personal legacy left by his father, Sydney Simmons, at a well-attended funeral service for the former broadcaster, small business adviser and entrepreneur at the King Street Seventh Day Adventist Church.

Saying his father did not care much for eulogies and that he was not paying the accustomed tribute, Simmons used the occasion to publicly answer the question, “What did my father teach me?”

The City church, filled with Sydney Simmons’ associates from broadcasting, sports, business, and other areas of his endeavours as well as relatives and friends, heard his son tell how his “stubbornness of passion and zeal and the arrogance of youth and the hubris of intellect” served to diminish his learning of the lessons. But yesterday he acknowledged that his father was “far wiser than I gave him credit for”.

Kevin said he learnt from his father “to be a steward of the past, a custodian of heritage, to connect with people and how to teach”. (GC)
