TWO CANADIAN SISTERS visiting the island didn’t manage to make it past the airport.
Both Kiyha Calissa Schrouder, 38, and her younger sister Caleece Whitney Schrouder, 31, were slapped with drug charges after allegedly trying to sneak drugs into Barbados on August 5.
When the two women appeared before Magistrate Kristie Cuffy-Sargeant in Criminal Court No. 2 of the District ‘A’ Magistrates’ Court yesterday, they were not required to plead to the charges of possession, supply, importing and trafficking cannabis.
Kiyha, who resides at #1955 St Jacques, Apartment 10, Montreal, Quebec, is accused of having 18 kilogrammes of the drug in her luggage. The drugs have an estimated street value of $144 000.
Caleece, a day care attendant, was allegedly caught with 8.7 kilogrammes of cannabis worth $69 600. She was also charged with possession and importation of 12 methamphetamine tablets worth $420.
They were not required to plead as it occurred in the District ‘B’ jurisdiction.
The sisters were remanded to HMP Dodds until August 17, when they will appear in the District ‘B’ Magistrates’ Court after police prosecutor Sergeant Carter Nicholls objected to bail.
She contended that the two were flight risks as they were visiting from Canada and pointed to the seriousness and nature of the offences.
Their lawyer Ajamu Boardi did not make a bail application. (RB)
