Mottley: Put codes to govern confessions

CODES AND REGULATIONS for taped confessions are urgently needed along with an order from the top brass of the police force for recordings to be routine.

These were two of the suggestions from noted jurist Elliott Mottley, who called into VOB’s Sunday Brass Tacks programme yesterday to contribute to a discussion on a recent Caribbean Court of Justice ruling that freed two men previously convicted of murder primarily on the basis of written and verbal confessions.

He said it was not a question of taking a man in a room and simply videotaping him but there should be an established special room, a regime for the confessions and it should in the presence of officers at a certain rank. (LK)
