SOME LOCAL JOCKEYS have had the opportunity to make a name for themselves in places other than this island’s track.
One such jockey is the veteran and champion rider Patrick Husbands. The 44-year-old Husbands, who recorded his first win at age 16 at the ever prestigious Barbados Gold Cup, had his breakthrough year in 2003 when he won the Canadian Triple Crown at the Woodbine racetrack, after migrating to Canada.
In recent years, younger jockeys the likes of Rico Walcott and Rickey Walcott, Slade Callaghan, Quincy Welch, Rocco Bowen, Chris Husbands and Chris Griffith have all followed in his footsteps and gone on to land victories overseas.
At last weekend’s Grade I Massy United Barbados Derby, fans alike though proud that local jockeys had found greener pastures, were divided on whether they should return home to ride more regularly. (BARBADOS NATION)
