WHEN MAUREEN KING went into her backyard around 8:30 a.m. yesterday she had the shock of her life when she discovered a snake tangled in an old fishing net.

King, 73, who lives in Paynes Bay, St James, told the WEEKEND NATION that she felt so bad after she spotted the snake that “I had to go and lay down”.

“That was the first time I ever saw a snake in my life,” she said.

“I was so frightened that I called my neighbours to deal with it. And up to now it still got my head hurting.”

King’s neighbour Phillip Rose, who killed the snake and buried it, said he suspected that it was a young boa constrictor. He said he knew how to hold the snake and cut off its head because he had dealt with one a few years ago when he lived in Holetown.

Rose added that he felt the mother could be lurking around and suggested that he help King search her property.

Another neighbour, Harietta Joseph, who lives a stone’s throw away from King, said she was concerned about her grandchildren.

“I have three grandchildren who come outside and play all around here. Now I have to be very cautious about where I let them play.”

The snake was about three feet long.

This was the first time in two years that a snake has been spotted and reported in Barbados. Prior to that two reported cases were made in 2014, one in 2013 and one in 2012. (SB)
