Dance group raises funds for mural project

THE FOYER of Norman Centre was transformed into a dance studio of sorts recently as the Inside Out Dance group staged one of their fundraising drives.

The six-man team managed by radio talk show host and author Denise Charles used their moves as a means of collecting much needed cash for a mural painting project for the Clapham Community Centre in St Michael.

The youngsters transformed the atmosphere of the mall as they danced to the latest Crop Over tunes. A couple of the region’s hottest summer hits were also in the mix.

From time to time some inquisitive onlookers paused to check out what the hype was about with some placing money in a nearby container.

At one point the front door of the Broad Street shopping centre was entirely barricaded with those who were interested in seeing what the group had to offer.

Porgie and Murda’s Shakkle Out boomed from time to time along with the increasingly popular Hop In De Bar. Popcaan’s voice also echoed in the area as dancehall moves were executed-some even infused with b-boy twists and turns.

Charles acknowledged that most of the selections were not necessarily what was considered “wholesome” but she said they were a true reflection of the nation’s youngsters and their interests.

“Some of our means might seem a bit radical to some people because I’m sure that there are some people who may not utilise the music that we do but we still believe that youth have their focus and the type of music that they listen to and we believe that there are ways that we can seek to bridge that gap,” she said.

“This can create conversations on some of the things that they go through in life,” Charles added.  (MR)
