The circus may be in town, but Barbadians will have to wait a bit longer to see it.
The Suarez Circus, called Mexico’s biggest circus, was temporarily shut down yesterday, just a day after its grand opening near the Belle Junction, St Michael.
Twenty years since its last appearance on these shores, it has been a turbulent time for Suarez Circus, with a day’s delayed start due to Customs clearance issues, resulting in its opening on Saturday evening, and then yesterday’s closure by the Ministry of Health and Wellness supported by the Barbados Police Service.
Assistant Superintendent of Police Joel Williams, who was seen speaking to circus manager Reuben Suarez, told the Daily Nation the shutdown was due to environmental issues.
“We are trying to get them sorted out, and as soon as that is done, they can reopen,” he said.
For his part, Suarez said the issues would be sorted and those affected by the postponement could either get refunds or use the tickets for a later show.
A local worker at the circus, who requested anonymity, said he did not understand why they were shut down.
“Two people from the Ministry of Health came here [on Saturday] and there were no problems, so I don’t know why someone else from there came [yesterday] to shut down the place. They came around 4 or 5 p.m., after the first show for the day, and said there was a lack of water and the [food] stalls were not properly organised. ‘Nuff’ people get turned back, more than 1 000,” he said.
