Government is investigating concerns raised by the Barbados Association of Funeral Directors (BAFD) about delays in the release of warrants for burial or cremation.
Attorney General Wilfred Abrahams said the issues were brought to his attention by the association in an email yesterday following an article in Saturday’s Sun highlighting problems affecting the funeral industry.
“The article raises disturbing concerns. The issues raised therein are being investigated with a view to being dealt with immediately,” Abrahams said.
He thanked the BAFD for bringing the matters to Government’s attention, while noting that responsibility for the Courts and Coroner does not fall directly under his portfolio.
Abrahams, however, said Minister of Legal Affairs and Criminal Justice Michael Lashley is dealing with the matter and has already met with some of the affected parties.
Lashley has also invited the BAFD president to a meeting on Monday, September 28, as Government seeks to resolve the concerns.
“How we look after our loved ones after they have passed is too important a matter not to be addressed with appropriate care, respect and sensitivity. And we will do just that,” Abrahams said. (BGIS)
