If there is one person who does not have to be told about the effects of gun violence, it is Dario Athelston Deangelo Murray, his lawyer Safiya Moore said yesterday.
Murray, who admitted he was transporting a gun to another man when he was caught by police, is now a wheelchair user after he was shot earlier this year.
The case prompted prosecutor Senior State Counsel Paul Prescod to issue a plea for an end to gun violence.
“Every day I come to court I tell people put down the guns, but people think you’re a stuck record,” he said. A gun is a deadly weapon. People lose their lives. People are paralysed. People lose their families.”
Declaring that he will continue his “clarion call”, Prescod said he wondered if having a gun in a haversack was a new “fetish”.
“Every time you look around, there is a gun in a haversack and I’m wondering where it is coming from.” (HLE)
