A NEW PROJECT that could help boost the Barbados Blackbelly sheep population has been approved.

The Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA) received approval last week from the New Zealand High Commission for funding to assist the Ministry of Agriculture with upgrading the Greenland Livestock Research Centre in St Andrew.

The focus would be on developing the centre as a breeding and nutrition centre for the sheep, IICA representative for Barbados, Ena Harvey, announced Friday.

“There’s been a lot of talk about the Barbados Blackbelly sheep as a very signature item, as a very important protein source for Barbados. If we don’t have a critical mass of sheep, then we can’t do all of the value-added things with the leather and all of the other products,” she said, touting the research centre’s long history of breeding and nutrition trials.
