NO DOPPLER RADAR, no problem.

One of the most important pieces of state-of-the-art weather tracking equipment available to the Barbados Meteorological Service (BMS) has been offline since last year due to the unavailability of a part, and it won’t be replaced before the 2017 hurricane season is almost over.

But according to acting director of the BMS, Sonia Nurse, not having a functioning radar, though affecting forecasters’ ability to track systems, will not hamper their power to garner storm information or disseminate important notices to the public during the passing of a system.

“The Doppler Radar is very important. We would love to have it. But the radar has only been at our disposal since 2008. We’ve been doing this at the Met Office since 1963,” Nurse told the SUNDAY SUN. (BA)
