BARBADIAN Orlando Husbands won the gold medal at the Central American and Caribbean (CAC) Under-20 Chess Championships today.

The top local player was assured of the top prize after playing to a draw against Trinidadian Isaiah McIntosh in the ninth and final round of games at Divi Southwinds Hotel.

Husbands, the No. 3 seed who was last year’s bronze medallist, finished on eight out of a maximum nine points, half of a point more than No. 2 seed Mauro Ampie of Nicaragua, who also had to settle for a draw in his last game.

It was the first time a Barbadian won the gold medal at this level since 1986 when Kevin Denny was the champion.

Husbands, a FIDE Master, also became the fourth Barbadian to achieve the title of International Master, joining Denny, Terry Farley and Deslisle Warner. (HG)
