BARBADIAN Orlando Husbands moved the top of the table in the Central American and Caribbean (CAC) Under-20 Chess Championships after outplaying Trinidadian rival Joshua Johnson on Saturday evening.

Husbands, the No. 3 seed who is seeking to become the first Barbadian to win gold at the event in more than 30 years, moved to four-and-a-half points out of a maximum five ahead of yesterday evening’s sixth round of games at Divi Southwinds Hotel.

While Husbands won, fellow pre-series front-runners Mauro Ampie of Nicaragua and Adrian Fuentes of Panama had to settle for a draw when they clashed, leaving both on four points.

FIDE master Husbands, last year’s bronze medallist who is aiming to be the first Barbadian to claim gold at this level since Kevin Denny in 1986, was set to play Fuentes in the sixth round. (HG)
