THE ONLY WAY is up for the Democratic Labour Party (DLP) as it enters the home stretch for next year’s general election.

The ruling party has suffered a decline in popularity, as has Prime Minister Freundel Stuart, while the Opposition Barbados Labour Party (BLP) and its leader Mia Mottley have enjoyed enhanced support with a maximum of about ten months left in the life of the current Parliament.

When respondents were asked “Which party will you support?”, the DLP garnered 11%, the lowest ever for a government in a public opinion poll, compared to 51% for the BLP, the highest recorded.

Support for the BLP comes from people who believe it is more suited to respond to the economic problems facing Barbados with as many as 81% regarding it as “better equipped”, while the DLP’s support is based on enduring loyalty to that party. (ES)
