Barbados told to up tourism game

REFRESH A TIRED tourism product or risk losing out to fierce competition from the global cruise market.

That’s the advice to Barbados from president of the Florida-Caribbean Cruise Association (FCCA), Michele Paige, and executives from major cruise ship lines at the first ever town hall meeting held here.

The warning yesterday to tourism industry officials came on the heels of an encouraging 2017 first quarter performance of the cruise sector.

A Barbados Statistical Service report for January to March showed 301 114 cruise passengers came to the island on 228 cruise ship visits, representing an 18 per cent growth in cruise business for the period, while the Bridgetown Port welcomed 725 000 cruise passengers and eight new home-porting cruise ships in 2016. (GC)
