Caution on acquisitions

Government has been cautioned by the Opposition People’s Party for Democracy and Development (PdP) about the manner in which it wields its power of compulsory acquisition of private property.

In fact, spokesperson for the party, Reverend Paul Leacock, said governments must ensure that when such power is exercised it is unquestionably for a good national purpose. According to him, justice must be seen by the citizens to be done and power must never appear to the citizens to be abusive by the state.

Addressing the matter of compensation of owners of properties acquired under the Land Acquisition Act during a press conference at the Office of the Opposition in the Parliament Building yesterday, Leacock said anytime there is a compulsory acquisition it should be just. (SDB Media)
