THE NETBALL FIRE between Barbados and Jamaica was stoked as the Cave Hill Blackbirds pipped the Mona Pelicans to take gold in the University of the West Indies Games after a tense battle at the Netball Stadium yesterday.

Both Mona and Cave Hill had scored runaway wins over St Augustine and Open Campuses to set up the final against a backdrop of the Bajan Gems’ historic win over the Sunshine Girls last week Monday to draw a three-test series.

The presence of Shimona Nelson, Thristina Harwood, Carlalee Tinglin and Shamera Sterling from Jamaica clashing once again with Gems’ Shonica Wharton, Sheniqua Thomas and Rieah Holder added to the drama.

However, with intense rivalry on the court and in the stands, the Blackbirds soared to a 47-45 win after surging from deficits in the first two quarters 11-16 and 25-26 to lead 38-34 in the third session before going on to take the title. (KB)
